Keenjhar Lake is a man-made water reservoir located in the Thatta District of Sindh, Pakistan. It is also known as “Keenjhar Jheel” or “Keenjhar Dhand”, and is a popular tourist destination due to its proximity to the historical city of Thatta, which is only 36 kilometres away.

Formation of Keenjhar Lake

This Lake was formed by the connection of two lakes namely Sonehri and Keenjhar. Therefore it is quite large and also stands as the second-largest freshwater lake in Pakistan.

Keenjhar Lake is an important environmental resource and sanctuary for migratory birds in Pakistan. It is the second largest freshwater lake in the country, providing a natural habitat for various species of fish and other aquatic life. Unfortunately, due to environmental degradation, the quality of the water has decreased, making it more difficult for the local fisherfolk to sustain their livelihoods. The best route to take when travelling from Karachi to Keenjhar Lake is National Highway 5. The total distance is over 100 kilometres and it will take approximately 2 hours to reach your destination if you are traveling at a speed of 80-90 kilometres per hour.

1) Fishing

The Keenjhar Lake is a popular fishing spot for locals and tourists alike. Last year, the Sindh Minister of Livestock and Fishing launched a project to support and promote fishing in the lake, making it even more attractive for anglers. The lake boasts of a wide variety of fish species and a great atmosphere for an enjoyable day of fishing.

During the first six months of 2019, around 60,000 fish seeds have been thrown into the lake in an effort to improve its fish population. This is a significant step forward in improving the fishing conditions in the lake and its surroundings.

Keenjhar Lake, a reservoir of clean water, provides a great spot for swimming. It is much more desirable than the seawater which is salty and polluted. Moreover, people can even rent an inner tube for Rs 100 to enjoy a safe and fun swim.

3) Boating

Along with other stuff, tourists can also enjoy the facility of motorboat rides. The seating- capacity of these boats is 8-10 people. In case you don’t want to share the ride, you can privately hire the boat for 1 hour. The charges for hiring the boat start from Rs 500 and go up to Rs 2000. The prices depend upon the time you hire the boat.

4) Shrine of Jam Tamachi

Aside from recreational activities, a visit to the Keenjhar Lake Mazar of Jam Tamachi is also worth considering. Located in the middle of the lake, this shrine is visited by countless devotees every day. You can access the shrine via motorboat, and boat rental services are available for as low as Rs 500.

5) Keenjhar Lake Huts
