Haleji Lake is a large freshwater lake located in Thatta District, Sindh Province, Pakistan. It is 6.58 km2 in size and is surrounded by marshes and brackish seepage lagoons, providing an important source of water for the area. The lake offers a variety of recreational activities, including fishing, boating, and birdwatching. Haleji Lake is an important habitat for a number of rare and endangered species, and it is also used for irrigation, providing open-water resources for local communities.

History of Haleji Lake

Haleji Lake is a reservoir in Karachi, Pakistan, that was converted from a saline lagoon in the 1930s. During World War II, the British Government of Sindh Province increased the capacity of the lake by introducing a feeder canal from the Indus River. This allowed salt water to be drained out and a new embankment was constructed around the lake, fed with fresh water through the canal. The project was completed within 24 months in order to provide more water for the troops stationed in Karachi.

Fauna of Haleji Lake

Haleji Lake is an important wetland in Pakistan, providing a vital habitat for numerous aquatic bird species. It is a popular wintering area for waterfowl, such as cotton teal, spot-billed duck, crimson moorhen and pheasant-tailed jacana, and also serves as a breeding ground for egrets and herons. The lake has been identified as an Important Bird Area and provides a safe haven for migratory birds.

Haleji lake is a popular picnic spot among Karachiites, as its water supply from Keenjhar lake has enabled it to restore its former glory. The lake is 17 feet deep, and the water level is 12 feet. Although there were issues with the cleanliness and smell of the lake in the past, the water supply has greatly improved the condition. According to the Sindh wildlife department, 22 species of birds have been recorded at the lake, along with 100 crocodiles. Families can stay and relax at the resorts available near the lake, making it an ideal destination to beat the summer heat.
