The Pir Ghaib Waterfall is a popular tourist destination located in the Bolan valley of Balochistan, Pakistan. Situated 70 kilometers from Quetta, it is a rocky mountainside cascading through streams and ponds amongst the palm trees. It is a popular spot for picnics and is often referred to as Pir Ghalib.
History of Pir Ghaib Waterfall
Legend states that Pir Ghaib and Bibi Nani arrived at the area to spread Islam, but were met with hostility by local fire worshippers. This prompted the fire worshipers to send an army to try and stop the pious couple from converting the locals.
In the Bolan Gorge, the siblings split up; Bibi Nani descended into the ravine (her supposed tomb is under a bridge about 15 km downstream) while her brother fled into this arid landscape with the army in hot pursuit.
The ancient people of the Indus Valley believed that the Bolan Gorge was a place of mystical power, and long before Pir Ghaib was venerated there, travelers and traders used to make stops at the sacred spring of the gorge. Legends tell of how Pir Ghaib was able to split the rock wall with his prayers in order to be saved, and to this day Hindus worship him as Mahadeva. This revered site continues to captivate visitors from near and far, many of whom come seeking solace, guidance, and blessing from the powers of the eternal.
Due to the lack of understanding of the Indus script, it is difficult to know which of the Vedic gods evolved from an early Indus Valley deity, or which goddess evolved into Durga, or which god was celebrated by walking into rock walls. However, through archaeological and linguistic evidence, scholars have been able to trace the evolution of many of these gods and goddesses. Scholars have also been able to uncover some details about the worship of Pir Ghaib, the god associated with walking into rock walls. This ancient god was likely a part of the pantheon of the Indus Valley civilization, but more research is needed in order to gain a better understanding of its origins and practices.
