History of Lahore Zoo
Lahore Zoo is the oldest zoo in Pakistan and has a long history of operation. It was first established in 1872 after Lala Mela Ram donated an aviary to the Lahore Municipal Committee. The construction of the zoo started in the 1860s and was then transferred to the Deputy Commissioner and Commissioner, Lahore in 1921. Subsequently, its management was placed with the West Pakistan Agriculture Department, Livestock and Dairy Development Department, and eventually the Wildlife & Parks Department in 1982. Currently, its management is governed by the Zoo Management Committee (ZMC) of Lahore Zoo, formed according to Punjab Zoos & Safari Parks Rules 2012.
The Lahore Zoo has significantly changed since it was transferred to the Wildlife Department in 1982. These changes have included alterations in the exhibits, the layout of buildings, the landscape pattern, and the administration. As a result, the zoo has become self-sufficient, meeting all its own financial needs without relying on outside funding.
Lahore Zoo is a popular attraction for families, especially during the winter and summer holidays. With its well-maintained pathways, clean and green surroundings, and a variety of refreshment stands, it's no surprise that Lahore Zoo attracts over 4.5 million visitors annually. Visitors can enjoy a fun and comfortable experience exploring the zoo and its wonderful animal inhabitants.
