Derawar Fort is located in Ahmedpur tehsil of southern Punjab, which is 130 kilometers to the south of Bahawalpur. The fort attracts the masses due to its high number of bastions. The 40 defenses of the fort can be seen miles away from the Cholistan desert. The fort has thirty-meter-high walls with a perimeter of 1500 meters.
The fort was built by a Hindu Rajput leader, Rai Jajja Bhati, who belonged to the Bhati clan. It was made to pay homage to the king of Bahawalpur and Jaisalmer in the 9th century. The early name of the fort was Dera Rawal, but it became famous as Qila Derawar. The fort was rebuilt in the 18th century when the Abbasi rulers captured it. The defense has an old cannon where people get their photoshoots done. It has an underground tunnel that is supposed to lead to the Bahawalpur Mahal and even India. A thousand-year-old mosque that is broken yet beautiful can also be seen in the fort. The fort is an essential spot for tourists, but it is deteriorating day by day; measures should be taken to preserve it as soon as possible.
