The northernmost region of Pakistan making the Gilgit-Baltistan territory is a 72,000 sq. km stretch of valleys guarded by mountains and glaciers. The region also houses some of the unique ethnic societies practicing appealing traditional values. Its mountain grandeur, cultural diversity, distinctive landscape, serene lakes, gushing rivers, striking highlands, man-made marvels, flora and fauna, and the four distinct weather patterns make the area a prominent tourist hotspot. It is here that the three of the world’s highest mountain ranges meet. Five of the world’s highest mountains above 8000m, more than 100 mountains above 7000 m, and countless mountains above 6000 m and 5000 m besides some of the longest glaciers outside the polar region are situated in Gilgit-Baltistan. The prime attraction and trade artery, the Karakoram Highway (KKH) passes through this region connecting Pakistan and China at Khunjerab top, the highest metalled border at 3737 m.
