Kalan Kot Fort

Kalan Kot Fort or Samma Fort (also commonly termed as Kala Kot or Kalyan Kot; historical name Tughlikabad) was constructed probably in the time period of fourteenth century along with the city of Thatta. It is situated five kilometers south of Makli. The Kalan Kot fort was in use up until the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb ruled the state of India, and no one knows why or how the fort was destroyed. The fort of Tughlikábád was constructed by Jám Taghúr or Tughlik, on the location of the older Kalá-kot, over 2 miles south of Thatta; but that, as well as its predecessor, was left unfinished and uncompleted by its founder. By a very strange vicissitude, the term of Tughlikábád is now comparatively forgotten, and that of Kalá-kot erroneously known as Kalán-kot (the great fort), though for a time period superseded, has restored the just claims of Rájá Kalá, and yet attracts the attention of the travelers and tourists. The ruins and remains of Samma-nagar, “the city of the Sammas,” are to be traced near the city of Thatta.
