GPO Lahore
Built-in 1887 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, the General Post Office (GPO) is located on Mall Road, near Anarkali. GPO is Pakistan’s largest post office, and it handles almost 20 000 mails daily. Sir Ganga Ram, one of the most renowned architects of his time, designed the building. GPO not only represents a contrast between the means of communication during the British Raj and the modern means of communication but is also a classic example of how a place evolves to meet the changing demands of different eras. Initially, people only used to go to GPO to send letters to their relatives and friends, but with the rapid technological improvements, people can now transfer money and goods in any part of the world.
