Many Kashmiris who migrated from India after the Partition settled in Gawal Mandi. The name 'Gawal Mandi' comprises Gawala's (milkman) and 'Mandi' (market). Before the Partition, it used to be one of the biggest buffalo milk-producing markets in Punjab, hence Gawal Mandi's name.
